Go watch Watchmen, the movie:

Silk Spectre
Last Friday I went to the movies with my wife. We were trying to watch a scary movie with other friends, but they asked us to wait for them to watch that movie, so my wife and I chose another movie, mostly based on the schedule as we did not have a strong preference for any of the movies being shown.
We chose WATCHMEN; we really didn’t know what to expect, in one hand I had the image of the posters in the movie theater which showed a bunch of funny guys dressed up in latex
In the other hand I had a positive comment from a friend telling me this movie was all except a movie for kids.
I enjoyed the movie since the very beginning to the end, I got involve in the plot and loved the characters. I was surprised with the changing events in the story and confused with many of the philosophical topics. I was not sure who the “bad” guys are even when the movie was finished. I also learned that surrealism is not only for paintings and that men wearing latex suits could be someone I can respect. I realized not everything is already done in terms of new fresh ideas in Hollywood.
I liked it not because it is another pretty and easy-to-follow movie, but because it is great looking and challenges me to understand it.
I won’t tell anything else about the story of the movie as I do not want to screw it up for anybody who hasn’t seen it, but I do want to remark the following:
- I watched the movie on IMAX , so this is a plus for any movie.
- Great photography, you could watch this movie on mute and still enjoy the visual effects, the slow-motion scenes, the saturated colors, the locations, etc.
- The characters, are deeply developed, each of them has an important role in the movie. You get to know the past of each of them and try to understand why they act the way they do and also their personalities.
- Music is fantastic, I’m a music ignorant, I have no idea of the song’s names or authors used in the movie, but they are just great and very appropiate in order to create the correct atmosphere in each scene.
- Silk Spectre II (no need to add any comments here
).
To summarize and conclude: This movie is the Cirque Du Soleil of the movies, a surrealistic expression that will not work for everybody, only for those who can be fan, at the same time, of regular comic books as well as serious philosophy.
Hey, great post! I found your comments especially interesting because you haven’t read the graphic novel. Having read the novel, in my perspective I found the movie to be extremely simplistic to each character’s background and storyline. There were even moments in the film I felt might’ve been confusing to the viewer (probably because of deleted cuts Snyder made at the studio’s request to make it less than 3 hours long).
But I agree with you that the film was a visual masterpiece with amazing special effects and screen shots. Once again, great post.
Thank you for your comment! Very glad to hear you enjoyed it!!
Yes, looking forward to read the graphic novel… I was totally unaware of where all this ‘latex people’ was coming from. Probably my opinion on the movie will change after reading the novel, but you know, I also believe movies will never be capable to capture and reflect the essence of a book or a comic, there is to many details and philosophy that can not be include in a 2 hours (or in this case almost 3-hour movie).
For an instance when I read the book Contact (Carl Sagan) and then watched the movie with Jodie Foster, I was a little bit disappointed because there were some discrepancies between the movie and the book, after a while I decided not to expect too much from the movies based on books or comics; instead I decided to see the movies as a good opportunity to put faces and special effects to whatever I had already pictured on my mind. They are also a good chance to share a book/comic you loved with other people who hasn’t read the original thing. Just my two cents…
Thanks for visiting and reading the blog, have a good one!

Hi herculesrob,
Are you aware that the director is planning to release a 4 hour version of the film? Hope this corrects the issues that you mentioned, cause normally that’s the biggest issue with films adaptations nowadays, they cannot dig deeper into the emotions/feelings/backgroud of the character.
Regards,
I have not seen the movie yet but being a guy that has read the comic book I know what a masterpice Watchmen really is… You got to love Rorschach, amazing character.
The reason why I’m posting this comment is to entirely disagree on something you mentioned: “I realized not everything is already done in terms of new fresh ideas in Hollywood.”
Hollywood (with a few minor exceptions) has lost the ability to create something new, all we seem to recevie nowadays is remakes from old movies, sequels trying to capitalize on sucessfull formulas and comic/novels adaptations.
It’s good that they translate books or comics into a movie cause I can tell you that personally I haven’t listened of “Lord of th Rings” till the movie came out (just to give an amazing example), but it really reflects that the true geniouses of Hollywood from a story perspective are the directos and the guy that adapts the comic/book into a movie.
I just hope you made the comment before knowing that there was a graphic novel (aka comic).
Anyway, hope to see the movie soon… seems to be awesome and I’ve heard that they corrected the biggest flaw in the story from my point of view, the ending!!!! You wouldn’t believe the crappy ending the graphic novel has…

Rodrigo
Hi Rodrigo -
Good to know you entirely disagree on my comment:
“I realized not everything is already done in terms of new fresh ideas in Hollywood.”
I do not expect we have the same opinion at the end of the day, but just to clarify, what I really meant with that phrase is not based on a new story, as I am aware of the Comic, my point here was more referring to the way to “tell” the story: the saturation of colors, Rorschach’s mask, the music and a lot other several elements that were obviously not in the original comic book.
I do agree Hollywood has now about 2 or 3 years in crisis in terms of new stories.
Thank you for your comment, very much appreciated.
Congratulations for your blog!!! I liked the pictures because it was the only thing that I understood. My english is not very well….
